chapter 8 'lost in time'

It was a very cold morning in the mountains of Burkesville that a young girl gave birth to a very beautiful baby girl. She was alone, scared but very brave. It was around 2am when she first felt labour pains. She quietly crawled away from her half dead sister, mother and father who were sleeping in the house. She made her way to the bushy mountain where alone she opened a door to a new life on earth.

Her pregnancy was a secret not even her sister noticed any change in her body. She was a well-built young girl; therefore it made it difficult for people to notice. She found out she was pregnant six months ago. She made a vow to herself that no one had to know. Towards finishing her matric, she was the family’s favourite child, pastor’s daughter and the school head girl. She could not trade any of those for anything. A child would mess her future. She tried several abortions but all of them failed. She lived life normal and was very good in keeping secrets.  She made sure that every day she does not share the bathroom with her sister. She would either wake up very early or leave late. She was a very brave girl, but most of all she was very intelligent. Since grade one she always came first in class. Last year she made it into the top ten best in the province. She was given a scholarship to go and study a degree of her choice in any University. She was the school’s favourite head girl and she had lots of friends however none of them knew of her secret.

But that night she was alone. She quickly wrapped the baby in a towel which she had brought along. She walked far away from the birthplace; her plan was to dump the baby. There had never been such pain, guilty and sorrow in her heart. She looked at the innocent soul, it was beautiful. She cried. She apologised and said she hoped she understood. She had walked for another hour when suddenly she saw some light from a distance. It was a home. Without thinking much, she said rather I leave you to die let me give you a chance to live. The baby did not cry, as if it knew its fate. She left the child by the door and ran away never to look back or come again.
An old lady opened the door to find an innocent soul waiting for her. She cried, took the baby, washed her and gave her a name. She called her Ruth.
