‘When I was fifteen a woman told me a story. A story about
two old men that hated each other, both of them were good farmers. One planted
a garden of yellow daises and the other planted a garden of red roses. When
they were young man they fell in love with the same woman, her name was
Delilah. Delilah married the one with red roses. When she was dying she asked
to buried in the garden of yellow daises. Between the two who do you think Delilah
loved the most’? ‘I do not know’ replied Ruth. ‘Hahaha ‘laughs Khumalo the taxi
driver. ‘I thought you were a lawyer Miss Ruth, lawyers always have the answer’.
‘Sometimes we don’t baba’ replied Ruth as she opened the door and bid farewell
to her all time friend Khumalo. It was exactly 7:35am; Ruth in her eighteen
year old career had never been late for work. She was successful, respected and
very rich. Every day she would wake up
at 4am; have a cup of coffee with her all-time favourite toasted cheese and
tomato. She hated driving and besides
she could afford a chauffeur to take her to work every day. She had a few friends but like most busy woman
she spent most of her time at work. She was single, happy and in three months’
time turning forty.
Two days ago Ruth successfully defended a woman who was
claiming R200 000 in maintenance. And
today she will be sitting in her office hoping to get another case to work on. She
loved her work a lot however most of her friends always thought she was hiding
from something. Maybe she over worked herself so that she would not face her
fears when she is not doing anything. Maybe she wanted to prove a point or
maybe she was just a successful woman making an honest buck. We all have secrets.
Secrets are a part of our lives, they are what builds us protect us and make us
who we are. We all have secrets. Ruth had hers too.
Jerry, her old time friend came in to the office with two
files in his hand. ‘Morning Ms Independent’, that is what Jerry called Ruth
because of her success by herself. ‘Ok with me here is two cases’. Should I start
with the good one or the bad one? ‘You chose Jerry to me there is nothing good
or bad it’s in how you see it’. Ok both of them are woman; the first one is
charged for being found in possession of drugs worth R50 000, little
evidence to prove her guilty and the last one is being charged with murder of
her husband, stabbing him fifteen times before she set the room he was sleeping in
on fire. And there is lots of evidence to prove her guilt. She paused a little,
went up and down. She liked challenges she was brave and determined woman. Nothing
seemed impossible, there always had to be a way somehow. She said ‘let us try
and get away with murder this time’
